FilmQuiz is a live, pen-and-paper quiz created for the cinema – taking full advantage of the big screen – and the big sound.

Teams of 2–4 people compete in five themed rounds, with questions shown on the big screen using film clips, stills, soundtracks, and other visual material.

Each quiz lasts about two hours and includes an intermission.

FilmQuiz has been running since 2001 with monthly events, adding up to hundreds of quizzes and tens of thousands of questions. It has been held in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, and was also showcased in the United States at SporcleCon.

Turning Quiet Nights
into Full Houses

FilmQuiz is a monthly big-screen event that transforms a regular – or even slow – cinema night into something special.

Teams of friends, colleagues, and film fans come together to test their knowledge in a lively, social atmosphere filled with clips, music, and surprises on the big screen.

For cinemas, FilmQuiz offers a unique way to draw audiences on evenings that are normally difficult to fill, while for participants it’s more than just a quiz — it’s a shared experience that keeps people coming back month after month.

There is something special about a full auditorium leaning in at the same moment, listening closely to a single sound or trying to decode a heavily pixellated image.

A door creak, a line of dialogue, a few notes of music, or even just a particular mix of colours can suddenly be enough to trigger recognition. What makes it magical is not just the guessing itself, but the shared concentration and the instant release when hundreds of people realise they know it.

Puzzling Creativity 

Another great example from our bag of tricks is the Quizzle – a round that has become a fan favorite over the years.

Even after more than 20 years of quizzes, we strive to come up with fresh ideas that surprise, entertain, and keep players coming back for more.

More than a pub quiz

We started out as a pub quiz, but over time we have used technology to develop the format into something much bigger. By combining film clips, music, visuals, digital tools and a carefully produced live setup, we have created a quiz experience that feels more like a show than a traditional quiz night.

From Cinemascope to Kaleidoscope

In this one you get all the audio, but only part of the video – for 30 seconds each, and after 9 of those, you get 30 seconds extra – but all at the same time. Fun and somewhat confusing, but also very satisfying to get right.

And the bonus question: Which year are all these films from?

FilmQuiz uses short, edited excerpts from motion pictures exclusively as part of a live quiz game. These clips are not presented as standalone film experiences but are transformed into new content through editing (e.g. pixelation, face replacements, mashups, puzzles, ultra-short fragments) and are fully integrated into the structure of the game.

Audience members cannot view or consume the films from these clips – they can only experience them as part of the quiz itself. The purpose of the use is transformative, the amount is limited in context, and there is no impact on the commercial market for the original films.
